1990s Television

Comedy television became very popular in the 1990s. Shows like Roseanne, Seinfeld, and Friends, along with many other popular titles were all introduced and hit off within America. The shows had such a big appeal because people were able to relate to the stories. Seinfeld and Friends were both shows about a group of friends in big cities living their best lives. People watched these shows and saw how carefree all the actors were in their shows, and it gave them the hope that they too could live their lives freely.

Roseanne used television for something totally different. It was used as an outlet to voice and make political stances on events in our government and/or economy. In total, 1990s television started the revolution of television being so prominent in our society. Nowadays, we can pull out our phones or computers, go to our netflix app, and watch any of one 300 available comedies or tv shows because of the start it got in the 1990s.

  1. I agree with why these television shows became so popular. These TV shows depicted someone living a "normal" life just as the viewer would. These effects of these shows can be seen in our lives now as it seems that is is okay to live life however you want. Now, there are not the molds that existed before these shows for people to be forced into.

  2. A really great example of the impact that television had on people during the 1990 which was a time period where being gay was a huge discussion, were the openly gay characters that these programs portrayed. They set an example for the lgbtq community that were still ¨In the closet¨ and when people saw that these public figures were gay , they started to become more accepting of the concept.

  3. I think the point that you bring here is really interesting. While the 90s was a time of the technology and entertainment, the idea of entertainment left an definite impact in shaping our current world. We now can tune in to countless amounts of shows on Netflix, Hulu or other television programs to watch our favorite shows. These entertainments all took shape in the 90s were people began expressing themselves on the screen for Americans to relate and sympathize with. Shows such as Seinfield and FRIENDS set a shape for what the common American lifestyle is.

  4. Seinfeld! I can personally attest that there is definitely an appeal to such shows. The goal I think was to portray regular (and mildly messed up) friend groups who weren't perfect like the tv often tried to make actors seem.

  5. The reason to which shows like Roseanne, Seinfeld, and Friends, along with many other popular titles were all popular towards the media consumers during that period of time included factors that were never seen before such as a new type of show. The Show was nothing like the other ones and it was about random topics and about random things. It was entertaining the community so why would they change it and caused other shows to emerge like those.
