Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold
In April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School in Columbine a mass school shooting occurred which lead to the death of 13 people and 24 others getting wounded. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold both were responsible for the mass shooting at this school. The reason why the Columbine school shooting was made a big deal was because of the number of deaths and specifically where it was located. The location was at Columbine High School where it was considered a safe school since there was not that much going around that location and there were minimal incedents. Both Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were seniors at the high school and they had different motives for the massacre and were found with different mental issues. In the case for Eric Harris he was found to have a Phsycopathic background and saw himself as surperior towards others. He also was part of the massacre since he thought that everyone at the school had to die since they were inferior to him and that he was to smart or above everyone. On the other hand Dylan Klebold was diagnosed with depression and he was seeking a reason to end his life. When Harris met Klebold he proposed his idea and plan. Since Klebold was seeking to end his life, Harris saw it as an opportunity to seek help from him and asked him to do it. Harris told Klebold that if he helped out he would end up having a reason to kill himself at the end of it.

This shooting was HUGE on the media and in the american radar. Why? because it was not a ghetto school, and it was two white, middle class highschool kids. It amazed people that shootings were done by people with psychotic problems versus for gang problems. People saw that mental disorders could affect anyone, even white middle class kids.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Claire there have been many school shootings prior to this incident but the fact that it took place in the suburbs shocked many people all over the country. At the time americans believed that school was the safest place for their children, but as you know school isn't the safest place for children even now.
