Straight Outta Compton

In late 80's there was a group of rappers from Compton that included Dr. Dre, Arabian Prince, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, DJ Yella and MC Ren. The group would come together to form NWA that was together from 1986 to 1981. NWA was earliest and most significant popularizers and controversial figures of the gangsta rap genre, and are widely considered one of the greatest and most influential groups in the history of hip-hop music.  rap group endured controversy owing to their music's explicit lyrics, which many viewed as being disrespectful to women, as well as to its glorification of drugs and crime. The group was subsequently banned from many mainstream American radio stations. In spite of this, the group has sold over 10 million units in the United States alone. Drawing from their own experiences of racism and excessive policing, the group made political music. They were known for their deep hatred of the police system, which sparked much controversy over the years. In 1988, Straight Outta Compton, in 1988. With its famous opening salvo of three tracks, the group reflected the rising anger of the urban youth. The opening song "Straight Outta Compton" introduced the group, "F--- tha Police" protested police brutality and racial profiling, and "Gangsta Gangsta" painted the worldview of the inner-city youth. This led to the group often being banned from radio stations and some police did not offer security when the group wanted to on tour affecting their plans. This was because the group was being targeted by the FBI for "advocating violence and assault is wrong and we in the law enforcement community take exception to such action." The group would disband in 1991 after some disputes within the group. A lot of them would go on to become successful solo artists as part of studios. Most of the group today is alive except Eazy-E who passed away after contracting HIV. The group would have a biopic made of them which was released in 2015 that would focus on the formation and the aftermath of the group being disbanded.

  1. I think this is interesting to look at. There are not only ethnic cultures but sub cultures in cities that represent groups of people. An interesting quote came to me when I read "F--- The Police", is that people would not be saying that if they never did anything wrong, because no one ever says f--- the firefighters.

  2. I believe that this group NWA made South Central more violent than it already was. They had many songs about hatred towards the police and lots of profanity in their music. They were a very successful group but at the time I don't think that them screaming out F the police really helped them at the time. Their fans would go out and do the same actions as them causing the problems in South Central to worsen.
