NAFTA- The North American Free Trade Agreement

The NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) brought a controversy to the American people. This agreement was signed by Canada, Mexico, and the United States to create a trade bloc in North America. By working with these other countries around the US, this helped America gain a stronger economy. This helped the Latinos gain jobs after the Latin American debt crisis. While Canada also wanted to come in to the agreement for they feared that their jobs would also be brought down. The main goal of NAFTA was to eliminate the trade barriers. This impact affected Canada in a positive way with a great net benefit. It also positively impacted Mexico, where the job rate increased by about 15%. But although most of Americans benefitted, there was a small group that didn't. This shows that most Northern Americans could benefit from this, but the small group of people who relied on the trade barriers went to a downfall. After all there is always going to be some group of people who do not have jobs, but this agreement boosted the North American economy.

  1. I think the information that you provided is very interesting. I am especially intrigued with the effect that it had to increase the job rate for about 15%. To give some historical context, the agreement began with president Ronald Reagan and his (FTA) agreement to a free North American trade zone in 1979. Soon after their agreement (FTA) Mexico approached American president George W. Bush and proposed the NAFTA because of the ongoing Latin American debt crisis. This significantly helped boost the North American economy and it was a good benefit for the Northern Americans.
