Margaret Thatcher- The Cold War

Margaret Thatcher, the British Prime Minister at the time of Reagan's presidency, had strong views that affected the end of the Cold War. She served from 1979 to 1990, and the cold war went from 1985 to 1995.

She met with President Reagan to try to call off his Star Wars (SDI) idea, and her main idea were based on MAD. MAD was Mutually Assured Destruction. This is the idea that if both sides in a war had so much ammunition to be able to destroy 25 percent of the other side's population.

She was a figurehead of conservative ideology, and the first female prime minister of Britain. her views made her controversial. During her three terms, she cut welfare, reduced union power, and made some industries private. Her fellow conservative ally was our fellow conservative President, Ronald Reagan.

  1. To add on a bit more facts towards her legacy, Margret Thatcher was not only Europe's first woman prime minister but also the only British prime minister in the 20th century to win three consecutive terms and according to Britannica, "at the time of her resignation, Britain’s longest continuously serving prime minister since 1827." Although her views were controversial, I think that she is still a memorable figure in history and a important influence in making 1980 the year for conservatism.
