The Resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920's (by Kyle Nero)

In America, the 1920's are often referred to as The Roaring 20's.  It was a decade of change.  On August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment was ratified, giving women a right to vote.  Immigration increased leading up to and throughout the decade.  Many Americans were thrilled with the change brought on by this era.  However, there were some who were less than thrilled about the country's new path.

Among those who were unhappy with change included many white males.  These men liked the way that things were, and did not want anything to be different.  When women gained the right to vote and more and more immigrants began to flow in to their country, many decided to take come together and take a stand.  They did this by joining the Ku Klux Klan.  The clan, made up almost exclusively of white males, has resurgenced many times throughout history, often times when there is a period of change underway.  At this time in history, the clan was rather violent with its demonstrations, often burning crosses and lynching minorities.  The clan has always been particularly dangerous because the town sheriff tends to be a white male, who tends to be a part of the clan.

The Ku Klux Klan still exists today, but we rarely see any violent demonstrations.  This is probably due to the fact that the clan is so deeply infiltrated by national law enforcement so they are unable to plan any protest that could be harmful to others.

  1. I agree with what you're saying Kyle. Today the Klan is made up mostly of white males. Many who are interviewed say they are unemployed and that their job was taken by immigrants. The Klan today is just made up of angry ignorant people who want to take their anger out on minorities. They just want to point fingers and blame others for their short comings.
