Effects of Sports In America
During the 1920s, sports came to many large cities as a way of entertainment. Baseball was the main sport that brought people together to enjoy a sporting event. One of the main reasons sports became such a widespread activity was because of the radio. The radio allowed people in a large area to all listen to the same thing, which in this case was sports. Since people were able to listen to a sports game on the radio, they felt more connected to the teams which were the main reasons sports became so popular in the 1920s. One main icon that all Americans knew was Babe Ruth. He was the first sports star and became an Amercian hero in the eyes of many Americans. His stature and talent made people go to the ballpark and entertain and enjoy themselves. This led baseball to become known as America's National Pastime. Sports became a large part of many people's lives because of how it connected people to a common form of entertainment.

Sports also played a role in increasing the importance of cities. When sports teams were founded in popular cities, like new york and philadelphia; it resulted in more people travelling to cities for entertainment. This helped increase urban life. More people were coming to the city, and it had more importance. Rural life was on the decline and urban on the incline. As you stated, baseball was the first sport that had major success in America but the introduction of more came to follow. As more americans moved westward so did the sports. Teams were established in San Francisco and LA and other big cities. The introduction of other sports also occured later in the 1900s. Overall, national sports increased in popularity in the 1920s, mostly thanks to Babe Ruth and other big players who are to thank for popularity rise.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to the sports becoming an entertainment factor for many across the world, there's also the radio, which at the time, was getting developed as well. These factors helped to connect people from all over US. They could finally talk to one another about same/similar topics without getting stuck on what to say because they didn't know what the other person was talking about.
