Treaty of Versailles Cartoon

Today I found this cartoon on the Treaty of Versailles, which is relevant to the cartoons we were studying in class, Woodrow Wilson, and the ending of World War I.  Literally, the cartoon depicts leaders of countries attempting to force a pill labeled "peace terms" down the throat of the Germans. The hand represents the Allied nations restricting Germany, and the pill is a representation of the Treaty of Versailles and its terms that forced Germany to take full responsibility in damages caused in the war. It seems to be anti Treaty of Versailles because it shows that the Germans literally could not handle (or in this case swallow) the peace terms that France, Britain, America, Italy, and Japan were forcing down their throats. Is there anything else that this cartoon is saying? Are there any other interpretations that could change the meaning of the cartoon in your point of view?

  1. Very interesting cartoon. I think that it worth mentioning that whether or not the cartoon is pro or against the treaty of Versailles. My believe is that the cartoon is against the treaty of Versailles. I believe this because it depicts the Germans leader being forced to swallow peace terms against his will. Also it's depiction of the peace terms being almost impossible to swallow further backs up my believe. The reason why I believe this was worth mentioning was because of the caption at the bottom that said it was published in a British newspaper.

    1. I agree that the cartoon is against the treaty, and it is very strange that someone from Britain would think this about the treaty even though Britain was not really negatively affected by the treaty, at least not directly. This makes me wonder if the person that created this cartoon sympathized with Woodrow Wilson and agreed that by making the Treaty of Versailles so one-sided they were encouraging another war. I am also curious about if this is how many people in the Allied Countries felt. They must have heard what Woodrow Wilson thought about the treaty, I wonder how most everyday Americans and Europeans that were not German felt about the treaty.

  2. To me it seems like a cartoon that is more just telling the story that is going on with the terms of the treaty. I depict the hand as Japan, France, Italy, Britain, and America having a grasp upon Germany.I believe this because it is a British cartoon and their country is part of the hand that has pure control over the man. Now if this were published by a German newspaper I would believe that this is publicity and they want to share to the German people that their fate is being controlled by the other countries.
